Fit For Success: Courtney Lawson

Let me just start by saying that I’m very grateful for this opportunity and blessed that I was chosen to share my journey. It’s something I never thought I’d be able to say.

My name is Courtney Lawson I just turned 32 on Oct. 9th, I am a mother of two boys; they are the reason why I started my journey.

After I had my oldest son Gavin I became a type 2 diabetic. I was taking medicine to control it and seeing my doctor regularly. Roughly 3yrs into taking the medication, my doctor suggested that I start exercising to lower my A1c. At the time I had no idea what that meant, but I did as suggested and got a personal trainer. I worked out roughly 4x a week, but still ate very unhealthy. Surprising, I lost 60lbs. Excited, I revisited my doctor to tell her of my great news. She didn’t seem to be interested or wasn’t impressed with my progress. I asked her if I would ever be able to get off of my diabetic medication and she told me I’d be taking it for the rest of my life. I was devastated and didn’t want to try anymore, so I stopped seeing my personal trainer. I just quit! My goal was to be taken off the medication and when I learned there was no chance of that I didn’t care anymore. I gained back what I had lost plus an extra 40lbs. I was in a size 26/28 pant and 3x tops. I was the biggest I’d ever been. I had no energy and no drive. I couldn’t play with my kids because I knew if I got on the floor I wouldn’t be able to get back up. Or I couldn’t walk them to the park because it hurt. The hardest part wasn’t that it hurt, but that I had to look my kids in the eye and tell them “No, mommy can’t!” That was the first turning point for me. It broke my heart. The second was the fact that I was taking the same medication as my 60yr grandmother. I was in my twenties at the time, to me that didn’t seem right. A week later I walked into Ej Fields Nutrition Club in Frankfort KY, and I learned about the free fit camps, and meal replacement shakes. I was told to do 2 shakes a day, healthy meal, and 2-3 healthy snacks a day. I honestly had a “this is not going to work for me” mentally because I thought I needed to do a lot of exercising to lose weight. I was taught that nutrition is 80% of weight loss and 20% is fitness. I started doing the meal plan, fit camps on Tuesday and some Thursday nights, and walking my kids to the park. My first two months I lost 40lbs and was fired up! I went back to see my doctor, but this time my regular doctor wasn’t there so I saw a new doctor. During my visit she told me that it was possible to get off my medication. She said with monitoring it’s possible. So we took the chance and did it! 3 months later I was off my medication and just overjoyed with happiness that it happened for me. I had more energy, I was working out, playing with my kids, overall I was happy.

As of today I’m down 155lbs, I own my own nutrition club now it’s called KBN (Kentucky Blended Nutrition). I’m able to help others that want to live healthy active lifestyles. I’m healthy, medication free, impacting my community, and most importantly my kiddos get a healthy vibrant mommy. Anything is possible when your on a mission! Get to your destination 💚
